Product Description

A fine example of English craftsmanship, this lovely gate leg table was hand-crafted around the year 1920. Today it is a very beautiful and charming piece, perfect for use in the home or office as a side or dining table.

Classic gate leg table design

English cabinetmakers first began making gate leg tables in the Jacobean period, a fruitful time of innovation in English cabinetry. A type of drop leaf table, gate leg tables offer the beautiful qualities of all similar pieces–a surface area that can expand or retract, doubling in size or more, in just a few seconds. This particular table expands from 18.75″ wide to 53″ in width with a depth of 41.25″. This flexibility makes this piece a great side table and would look lovely with any of our Chesterfield sofas.

Rich solid oak

The wood used in this piece is a rich selection of solid oak, with a deep, lustrous complexion and a pronounced grain that have grown more beautiful over the years as a patina has settled in. The result is a strong, attractive oak aged over time as only antiques are. The stunning medium color really helps showcase the beautiful grain of the wood.

Sturdy condition

Overall, this antique table remains in excellent condition. Structurally it is very sturdy, partly owing to the quality solid oak, and partly to the level of expert craftsmanship applied to assemble this table into a piece that has stood the test of time. Because it has moving parts, it is subject to greater stress than static pieces, yet because of its quality the leaves continue to operate smoothly and the firm gate legs don’t waver even a bit.
Cosmetically, there are very few small marks and finish wear to the feet and stretcher.
This gate leg table is truly an heirloom-quality antique and would make a fine addition to any period English furniture collection!
