Product Description

Crafted in England around the year 1960, we recently imported this antique bookcase to our Atlanta showroom. Overall it remains in good, sturdy condition and would make a fine addition to any home or office furniture collection.

A classic antique bookcase

In keeping with English cabinetry tradition, this elegant bookcase is as useful as it is beautiful. Both sets of doors close with magnetic latches, while the upper 10 1/8″ deep shelves are adjustable to one of two positions each. The lower shelf remains fixed. Two drawers provide convenient storage with the left drawer having a felt lined bottom and being divided. The glass top offers a lovely view into the interior of the bookcase, so storing books and other items for display is also possible. This flexible design allows this bookcase to function either as a general cabinet around the home or as functional yet classic storage in the office. Finally, each of the top shelves has a plate groove router-ed into it, making this a great dining room piece as well!

Georgian style design

The selection of flame mahogany used in the making of this bookcase is quite rich, with an attractive complexion and a pronounced grain. The dark, antiqued brass hardware does not detract from the stunning flow of the wood. Also, the doors have decorative inlay. Finally, the top features unique wooden fretwork, while the drawers are constructed with dovetailed joints. These elements are all classic to Georgian style; indeed, bookcases like this one have been manufactured in England for centuries, and each one is as beautiful and functional.

Sturdy structure

Because this bookcase is so well-crafted, it remains as sturdy today as the day it was made. There are small wear marks and slight finish wear here and there on the piece, but nothing that stands out or detracts from the overall charm. The top continues to sit evenly on the bottom, which rests on strong tapered feet. As a result, this bookcase disassembles very easily: two people can easily lift the top off of the bottom in order to make movement and placement as convenient as possible.
