This elegant antique bookcase with doors was crafted in England around the year 1960. As functional as it is elegant, it would make a wonderful addition to any period furniture collection. The classic Georgian style is especially suited for formal offices and dining rooms.
Classic Georgian style
The classic Georgian design of this rich yew wood bookcase is evident with every finely crafted detail. The yew was treated to a quality finishing process that ended in a coat of hand-rubbed wax, which helps flesh out the natural beauty of the wood as well as the underlying layers of finish. Two keys are included for the locking doors, while a unique pattern was applied to the fretwork of the doors. Like so many other aspects of this fine antique bookcase, the glass was glazed using a particularly high-quality method since every pane is an individual piece set into the sturdy molding rather than being part of a single sheet with molding glued onto both sides. A dental moulding adorns the cornice for an elegant look, and last but not least on the very bottom of the bookcase are charming bracket feet with a unique apron. These details combine to form a remarkably beautiful bookcase.
Modern functionality for the home or office
In keeping with antique English furniture tradition, this antique bookcase with doors is not simply a decorative piece but it is also very functional. All doors lock with the accompanying keys. The top sections house two adjustable wooden shelves. These shelves adjust via a brass pigeon hole system. The shelves have a depth of 9″. The lower sections each have a fixed shelf. Between is a row of finely crafted drawers.
How has this antique bookcase stood the test of time?
Overall, this antique bookcase with doors remains in good condition for a piece of its age. There is definite finish wear to the bottom and middle moldings and the feet as well as small dings and marks here and there on the piece. In general they contribute to the genuine antique charm of this yew wood bookcase with doors, which will only continue to grow more beautiful as time passes and a patina settles into the richly finished wood. This bookcase will, after all, endure for many years as it is incredibly sturdy and well-made. Such antique bookcases are not simply a fine addition to any antique furniture collection, but they are also a sound, long-lasting investment.
This does come in two pieces (top and bottom) for easier moving.
