This beautiful antique decorative box hails from England where it was made around the year 1890. The wood used is walnut which has developed a lovely patina over the years. A brass plaque on top and brass keyhole escutcheon on the front provide some subtle contrast to the wood and add to the box’s elegance. The top is also decorated with a carved line and ebony circles.
Inside this decorative box is a velvet cushion attached to the top and an open bottom lined with a pink paper. This box could have held anything from writing tools to cigars (although it does not smell like any tobacco was stored inside) to tea. It was mostly likely a glove box though for storing something like opera gloves that would have been made from white calf skin. You can be assured that whatever was stored inside was special to the owner. This would make an excellent gift to someone to hold a special small item.
There is a lock present but no key remains. Overall this antique decorative box is in very good condition. There are small very slight marks here and there as you would expect. The hinges are strong and the box opens and shuts easily. Don’t miss your chance at this one of a kind, unique piece!
