This incredible antique gate leg table was crafted in England around the year 1920. Today it remains as sturdy and as beautiful as ever, perfectly suited to grace any home or office furniture collection.
Classic gate leg table design
The great advantage of the gate leg table lies in its flexibility. Designed and popularized during the Jacobean period, gate leg tables have remained a staple in English furniture for centuries. It’s no small wonder, considering that this table measures only 18.25″ wide x 42.75″ deep with the leaves down, expanding to 59″ x 42.75″ with both leaves up. One or both leaves can be dropped for use as a side table, or both can be raised for setting out food or for dining, although only four people could seat comfortably at this table owing to the gate legs that support the leaves. This particular table is higher than many gate legs at a full 30″ tall.
Rich solid oak
The solid oak displays a remarkably rich complexion and a highly pronounced grain. When this gate leg table was first crafted, the wood was treated to an elaborate, time-honored finishing process that ended in a fine coat of hand-rubbed wax. The result is a beautiful solid oak table whose protective wax coating can be repaired simply by applying another coat. The feet are also subtly carved giving them more interest. The barley twist is done not only on the legs but on the stretchers as well with the short side stretchers being hand carved in a gorgeous flora pattern.
Very good antique condition
This gate leg table has remained very sturdy over the years. The leaves continue to operate very smoothly with no trouble at all, while the gate leg supports are solid and unwavering. Some minor scuffs have been sustained around the feet, and there are a small number of wear marks on the table top, which is normal for a piece of this age, and all of them have been finished over in previous maintenance by expert cabinetmakers and restorers. These distressed surfaces now contribute to the genuine antique charm of this gate leg table, which would make a great addition to any period furniture collection.
