This stunning set of antique ladder back dining chairs were made of solid oak in England around 1960. That date technically makes them vintage rather than antique. The set consists of ten chairs, two of which are armchairs.
Distressed Oak Wood
These solid oak antique ladder back dining chairs are strong and sturdy. The has been finished a dark color and was expertly distressed when these chairs were made. Distressing in antique furniture is when the wood is scarred, notched, dinged, or dented with chains and other tools before finishing. This process gives the wood a wonderful old, rustic feel and plenty of character. You will see light distressing on these chairs on the ladder backs, legs, and stretchers.
Antique Ladder Back Dining Chairs
Chairs are the hardest type of antique furniture to find in good condition. This set of antique ladder back dining chairs is an excellent find since all of the chairs are in very good condition! The seats are a rush seat which retain their strength well. The ladder back rests feature five graduated horizontal “rungs” (six on the armchairs). Graduated refers to the fact that they get thicker as they go from bottom to top. This is important because it shows the maker took his time to add detail and quality to his chairs and didn’t just slap them together off an assembly line.
These antique ladder backs sit on turned legs that are connected with turned stretchers. There are stretchers on all four sides which makes these dining chairs very sturdy. All ten remain in ready to use condition today. All chairs have signs of light wear in the form of tiny marks around the feet and legs as well as the back rests. They do not detract from the set and add additional character to the chairs.
All of the dining chairs have a seat height of 18″. The arm chairs measure 22.25″ wide x 18″ deep x 42″ tall with an arm height of 25.5″. The side chairs measure 19″ wide x 18″ deep x 37″ tall.
