Probably the earliest form of a travel office, the antique lap desk is a functional piece that was made in a variety of sizes and styles. The one shown here is a beautiful example of the artistry that can go into such a small box.
English Writing Slope
This piece is from around the year 1900 and was made in England. Like most antique lap desks, it opens up to reveal a sloped writing surface and small storage areas for ink, quill, and parchment. This particular slope is covered in a pink felt. Both sides of the slope lift up for storage underneath.
The wood used is a very nice selection of walnut. It has been enhanced with decorative satinwood inlays around the key hole and top. These diamond shaped inlays are quite well done. Another attractive and unusual feature for this lap desk is the beveled top.
Antique Lap Desk Condition
The structural condition of this box is very good. The hinges are strong and it opens and closes easily. The cosmetic condition shows its age. The finish is faded in some areas and there are small marks all over the box. The right side has a corner with a finish repair which is evident in the pictures. Inside, the felt has seen better days but remains in tact. There is a lock but no key is present. Overall this is a sturdy antique lap desk that has a worn, attractive look. It would be wonderful to use as display!
