A French classic, this antique pot cupboard is made from walnut wood and probably originated around 1900. Today it is in very good condition and would function very nicely as either a lamp table, nightstand, or end table.
Antique Pot Cupboard
Antique pot cupboards were used in the bedroom to hold the chamber pot. That way if you had to get up in the middle of the night and “go” you wouldn’t have to traipse outside in the cold to the outhouse. The cabinet would hold the pot out of sight until it could be emptied in the morning. This pot cupboard has a marble bottom inside the cabinet door. Marble wouldn’t stain like wood does if there were any spills. We have meticulously cleaned this piece and today it could function as any kind of end table.
The most prominent feature of this antique pot cupboard is its marble top. The marble is a lovely color and a great, low maintenance surface. We have found one repair to the back right corner of the marble top. Just below the top of the pot cupboard is a drawer which easily slides in and out on its wooden runners. The drawer is constructed with hand cut dovetail joints. Next comes the cabinet area with its marble bottom. Both the cabinet door and drawer have a metal knob pull. Finally this antique pot cupboard stands up on nicely barley twist turned legs which are all connected with a barley twist stretcher.
This antique pot cupboard is in very good condition. It has the aforementioned repair to the marble and a section of the back right foot is missing (only visible from the back). Some minor general wear marks exist and a small section of the molding on the back left side is missing. Otherwise it is a strong and sturdy piece that could support a heavy lamp. It is clean and ready to go directly into the home!
