This antique secretary desk was made by an English cabinetmaker around the year 1960. After acquiring it in an auction in the UK, we recently imported this secretary to our showroom and warehouse in Atlanta. Overall it remains in very good condition!
A beautiful secretary desk
The flame mahogany displays a rich complexion and a striking grain that have only grown more beautiful over the years. In complement to the mahogany, traditional satinwood fan inlay adorns the center of the fall. A few nicks and wear marks add character to the wood, although there are not many and they are mostly concentrated around the base, which is normal for a piece of this age. Meanwhile, a series of brass swan neck pulls adorn the drawer fronts. The desk area itself is inlaid with a rich writing surface of fine, brown leather bordered by gold tooling. As far as we can tell, this leather appears in the condition as other vintage leather samples that we’ve come across, so it is most likely original. The resulting ensemble of details makes this antique secretary desk quite a prize!
Classic antique secretary desk design
As useful as it is beautiful, the secretary desk is a popular design dating back hundreds of years. Like desks, secretaries provide a convenient office workspace. However, they also contain all of their drawers in a single line like chests, so they perform the double function of compact storage and an accessible desk area. This allows them to conserve space in the classic English manner–through an ingenious design that folds the desktop up into the body of the piece. Owing to this classic design and the sturdy construction, this antique secretary desk remains in very good overall condition and would make a fine addition to any period English furniture collection.
