This beautiful box is made from an exotic wood known as coromandel or calamander. It is an antique sewing box that was made in England sometime around the year 1920. We have recently imported this piece to our store in Atlanta, GA. Sewing boxes were used to keep sewing equipment like needles, thimbles, and thread in a place where they could be safely locked. This sewing box has a lock, but no key.
Antique Sewing Box
The coromandel has a really lovely grain and color to it. It is a lighter colored wood with black streaked grain. A plain brass plaque was been inlaid on the top. The inside containers a lift out top section that was fitted with dividers at one time, but they no longer remain. The inside of the top of the box still retains its blue padded upholstery that would have helped hold sewing supplies in their spot and a few sewing needles remain stuck inside it.
The condition of this antique sewing box is good. There is a small repaired split at the bottom of the box and a few minor wear marks here and there. Otherwise it looks great for its age and will be a beautiful decoration in any home!
