Product Description

This impressive oak gate leg dining table was recently hand-crafted in England. The third-generation cabinetmaker responsible for its creation selected only the finest oak and yew, refining the wood to perfection in a timeless gate leg design.

Gate leg dining table design

The gate leg design is quite old, dating back to the Jacobean period when it was first invented. Largely these tables remain popular due to their novel convenience: as a gate leg table, its leaves can be raised or lowered to suit your needs.  With the leaves lowered, they simply rest flat against the sides of the table; when they are raised, gun barrel legs swing out (like gates) to support them. As a result, this fine gate leg dining table can be stored like a sideboard when not in use, or put away to the side when floor space is needed. With the leaves up, the table measures 5′ in depth; the leaves lowered, it measures just 23.5″ deep. At 7.5′ in length, this table will provide quite a bit of surface area in any setting.

Rich oak with yew banding

Before construction on this table began, the cabinetmaker first selected the materials–a prize selection of oak with yew for a striking border. After an elaborate, seven-stage finishing process that ended in a fine coat of hand-rubbed wax, the wood now displays a rich complexion and a pronounced grain. The yew banding contrasts beautifully with the oak, which is itself quite beautiful. The result is a stunning oak gate leg table that would enhance any English period furniture collection.
