Here we have a quaint walnut Chinoiserie bookcase. This fun piece was made in England sometime around the year 1960 and we recently imported it to the US. It would make a great display piece in any room or hall due to its versatile size.
The term Chinoiserie refers to the painted decals on this bookcase which flora, oriental buildings, and people. They are quite well done and do not overwhelm the bookshelf. These decorations give the piece just enough interest to catch your eye without being gaudy. The two glass doors are each made up individual panes of glass (2 per door). The doors lock and one key is included. Inside are three glass shelves. The rest on brass pins and are removable, but not adjustable. The shelf depth is 9.75″. Finally, the entire piece sits on Queen Anne style feet which have painted decorations on the “knees”.
The wood used to construct this bookshelf is a beautiful walnut wood. It has a pronounced grain and lighter color.
Overall, this Chinoiserie bookcase is sturdy and well made. Structurally, it is very sound and ready to display whatever you need to put in it. Some of the painted decals have been worn away over the years. The left door has two minor chips as well on the edge. We have tried to include as many pictures as possible of this wear, especially on the major images. This type of wear is not very visible from a few feet away, but is apparent close up.
