Product Description

Made from beautiful walnut wood, this English antique writing box is a piece rich with character and history. Think of all the letters home that have been penned on this box in its over 120 years of life!

English Antique

This writing box was made in England sometime around the year 1890. As was common for the time the box was used as a portable writing desk filled with stationary and writing tools. During long train or boat trips or while staying at a hotel or relatives letters would be written using the box to friends and family. We see the boxes in many different sizes, woods, and with different decorations on the outside.
The walnut wood used on this box has a strong grain. It is complimented with two brass bands around the outside as well as a brass plaque in the top and brass keyhole escutcheon. Unfortunately, the key no longer remains. Inside is a purple velvet writing surface and some small storage compartments. The two halves of the slope lift up to reveal where the paper and envelopes would have been stored.

Writing Box Condition

We are listing this box in fair condition. It is structurally sound and sturdy but does have cosmetic issues. Starting on the outside there is various minor wear throughout. The brass bands have marks and small scratches. There are minor splits to three of the four top corners. These are cosmetic only. Inside you will find more minor cosmetic wear to the wood in the form of minor dings here and there. The velvet is close to the end of its useful life. It has various stains and marks and is split at the seam. The velvet is used as a hinge for the two halves of the slope to lift up to access their storage units. While it still functions for this, both sides are loose. We would recommend replacing this velvet with new or even leather. Despite these cosmetic issues it is a gorgeous English antique writing box with plenty of history and character. It would do well on display and look great in any home or office!
