This beautiful flip top game table is done in the Napoleon III style and comes from France. It was made there sometime around the year 1890. The main wood is walnut which has a stunning patina. The top features a checker or chess board when closed and then rotates and flips open to reveal a green felt card playing surface. The chess board section is inlaid with oak and ebony while the legs are well turned. Hand carvings adorn the apron. Also, the legs are joined with a sturdy stretcher that adds elegance to the overall look.
Structurally, this game table works very well. As you will see in the pictures, the hinges have had some repairs and some new screws. The felt has torn in a few places right at the folding seam. It could easily be replaced. The front left leg has a very small piece missing from one of the turnings. The top has a variety of splits, scratches, and small missing pieces of inlay. The overall look of the piece is quite rustic, but full of charm and character. It is very sturdy and clean.
With the top closed the piece is 38.25″ wide and 22.5″ deep. The top opens and turns to make a surface that is 45″ wide and 38.25″ deep.
