Here we have a great antique bookshelf that was crafted around 1960 in England by Bevan Funnell. They are a quality furniture manufacturer that has been around for decades and are known for making quality pieces. We are proud to have one of their pieces in our store!
Unique Glass Doors
The first thing that will most likely catch your eye is the unique curved fretwork on the glass doors. The lovely pattern is reminiscent of Gothic arches, but more subtle. Inside are three adjustable wooden shelves which can change position with a brass pigeon hole system. Their depth is 11.5″. Above, a dental molded cornice and two round carvings provide an elegant top for the entire piece.
There are two drawers both adorned with beautiful lion head brass handles with rings in their mouths. The inside of the left drawer bears the mark of Bevan Funnell. Both drawers were constructed with dovetailed joints. Finally the two cabinet doors open to reveal a spacious storage space with one removable but not adjustable wooden shelf inside. Both upper and lower doors on this antique bookshelf lock and a single key is included. The top and bottom separate for easier moving.
Antique Bookshelf Condition
Overall this piece is in good condition. It has a few cosmetic marks like a mark on the middle molding and a larger mark on the bottom molding by the right foot. The doors have some minor discoloration which we have shown a picture of. Structurally this antique bookshelf is in great shape and is quite sturdy, although there is a repair to the left side upper hinge which we included a picture of. The drawers open and close easily as do the doors.
With its unique look and warm color this bookcase will make an excellent addition to your living room or office!
