Originally made as a writing slope, this rosewood antique box makes a great decorative item or storage for special trinkets today. This is an English antique that was made sometime around the year 1890.
The wood is rosewood which is a strong and heavy wood used in fine furnishings and instruments. The color is dark brown with black grain. Subtle accenting the wood are brass inlays on the corners as well as a plaque and keyhole escutcheon. Another reason for the brass corners was to protect the wood from damage on the more susceptible areas. The interior is now empty, although at one time it would have had a leather writing surface and area for quill and ink.
This rosewood antique box is in good condition. There is a small repair on the bottom, back, right corner where it looks like the box was dropped. It is not very noticeable unless you are looking closely. Otherwise there are light surface marks throughout the box and the piece no longer retains its key.
Whether as a gift for someone special or a treat for yourself, this antique box will look great in any home!
