This set of six ornate shield back dining chairs was crafted in England around the year 1960. The carved backrests and richly upholstered seats show an impressive level of detail and quality, which has helped these chairs remain in very good overall condition.
Shield back dining chairs design
The shield back is a classic design dating back to the Georgian period. Developed by master English cabinetmaker George Hepplewhite, shield back dining chairs retain an ageless beauty even today. These particular dining chairs are carved with a wheat sheaf on each backrest, which complements the overall shape of the backs as well as the grooving that helps provide elegant definition to their edges.
Rich mahogany dining chairs
Crafted from solid mahogany, these chairs are not only quite beautiful but sturdy. The mahogany itself has developed the beginnings of a lovely patina over the years, with the result that it displays a rich complexion. Of course, this is possible precisely because these chairs were so finely made; they would have been finished using traditional techniques, which included an elaborate process with multiple coats. The wood has, however, sustained a number of small wear marks, which is inevitable for dining chairs of this age. These marks are quite minor and contribute to the overall charming character of this lovely dining chair set.
Removable floral seats
Each of these shield back dining chairs comes with an upholstered, removable seat. The upholstery has sustained some fading and stains, but can easily be recovered. As a result these dining chairs would make a fine addition to any antique furniture collection!
As a final note, the armchairs measure 22.25″ wide x 20″ deep x 39″ tall. The arm rests are 26.75″ from the floor and the seat in each chair is 18.75″ from the floor. The side chairs measure 19.5″ wide x 19.5″ deep x 39″ tall.
