It is not often you will find a Victorian antique writing desk that has been so meticulously hand carved as this one. The wood used is gorgeous oak that has received decorative carvings over almost every surface. The result is a visually stunning writing desk!
Victorian Period Antique
This desk was made in England sometime around the year 1890. It has survived in very good condition considering its age. The top has one filled age separation and one slight one, both where boards meet. Age separations occur when the boards that make up a surface shrink over time creating a tiny gap between them. This is normal in solid wood pieces and does not affect the integrity of the desk. Old and inactive wood worm holes are present here and there. Also, the left back corner has a very small missing piece of molding on the leg (shown in pictures). Finally, at one point, a stretcher connected the legs on the long side. This has been removed at some point in its life, making it much easier to sit at the desk. Otherwise this library table is in fine condition and will offer a sturdy surface to any who use it.
Carved Writing Desk
The most prominent feature as far as I see is the way the desk has been carved. Flowing branches and leaves cover the front. Complimenting carvings are carved into the other surfaces of the writing desk as well including the legs, sides, and back. The two drawers has a subtle brass knob handle that goes well with the design. As you would expect, the drawers are fashioned with hand cut dovetails.
The height from the floor to the bottom of the drawer area is 23″ (not counting the little decoration that hangs down in the middle).
