Being made in England, circa 1890 puts this bookcase in the tail end of the Victorian Period. It was sturdily made from mahogany wood and has survived the years well. Full length glass doors allow items displayed inside to be viewed. The doors do lock and a single key is provided. Inside, the top four shelves are adjustable and the bottom two are fixed. All shelves have a depth of 10.5″. Separating each individual pane of glass is stunning wood fretwork. Each door features a Gothic style arch in the fretwork.
Hand Poured Wavy Glass
Perhaps just as beautiful as the fretwork, the glass is the old style, wavy glass with an occasional bubble in it. This type of glass is extremely hard to find today and gives this bookcase additional charm.
Victorian Period Bookcase
While sturdy and strong, with properly working doors, this bookcase has some cosmetic marks to mention. At the very bottom, a small part of the molding on the right door is missing (see pictures). Both sides have developed minor age separations. The entire piece sports various small marks, indents, and dings from its over 120 years of life. We also feel the feet are not original, they appear newer. Finally, the outside of the back has been painted and, as you will see in the picture, someone applied some tape to the back. We feel this tape is there to keep light from streaming in through some of the separations in the back boards.
