This stunning vintage bureau was crafted in 1960’s England. Today, it remains as beautiful as it is sturdy and promises to make an excellent addition to any English furniture collection.
A beautiful vintage bureau
The most striking aspect of this bureau is of course the burl walnut. The original cabinetmaker would have applied an elaborate finishing process to the wood, then hand-rubbed a thick coat of wax. The result is a durable finish that really fleshes out the natural beauty of the burl walnut. At the same time, such quality craftsmanship has helped this vintage bureau remain in stunning condition. After all, the walnut itself is quite amazing, with a rich, lustrous complexion and a pronounced grain that are sure to complement any setting. Likewise the brass swan neck pulls form a lovely complement to the wood, which is only developing the beginnings of a patina that will continue to enhance the wood’s appearance as the decades pass.
A vintage bureau with modern uses
Bureaus were originally designed as a clever way to conserve space. Like desks, they provide the storage area that any functional workspace needs. All of the drawers feature dovetailed joints, operating very smoothly to this day, while the inner compartments are excellent spaces for holding smaller office supplies, paper, etc. Unlike desks, however, bureaus like this lovely vintage piece offer the additional benefit of a fold-up workspace. When not in use, the fall simply lifts up and rests at an angle on the structure of the piece. This gives bureaus their distinctive appearance–part desk, part chest of drawers–which in itself is a good reason to own one of these beautiful items. As a result this fine bureau is not only gorgeous, but it is also very useful!
Quality English-made bureau
Many of these aspects of this vintage bureau derive from a long and venerable tradition of English cabinetry. The design is several centuries old, while the techniques to build this piece have likewise been perfected over time. Every detail, from the selection of the burl walnut itself to the Queen Anne style legs upon which this bureau rests, speaks of the highest quality in furniture today. This is only one reason why such a piece has remained so beautiful and sturdy over the years (the other being good care). As would be expected of a piece of this age, however, this bureau has sustained a number of small scuffs and wear marks, which only add to its genuine character. Finally, the piece does not retain a key. So overall, this vintage bureau remains in very good condition!
The desk area measures 28″ wide x 20″ deep x 29.75″ from the floor.
