A truly beautiful antique here! Sometime around the year 1890, the maker crafted this piece in the William and Mary style. Technically, this makes it a Victorian Period piece, but people often copied styles of earlier periods.
Furniture makers of this period commonly used solid oak for their pieces. The dark stain is also a common look from the 1890’s. A single drawer provides some storage on the piece. Fitted with brass handles and hand cut dovetailed joints, it works easily. Also, the plate rack above has shelves with molding that will allow plates to display standing up.
Perhaps most exciting about this William and Mary antique hutch are the carvings. The plate rack back displays four beautiful arched carvings. Both within and surrounding these arches are scrolling carvings that are a true work of art. The carvings continue on the pediment, drawer, and other areas of this hutch.
Turned legs and columns provide plenty of support. The turnings and carvings go well together. Finally, the four legs all connect with a shaped stretcher that adds support and elegance.
William and Mary Antique Hutch Condition
While we give this antique hutch a fair condition rating, it is important to note that it remains quite sturdy. The issues we point out are cosmetic only. As with many old piece, old wood worm holes are present in a few places. These are not active and the piece has been treated. Several age separations have occurred throughout the years. They are located on the main counter area.
At the bottom, the stretcher appears to have been broken and repaired in several areas. Also, the front right leg is missing a small piece of turning towards the top. It is not very noticeable.
Finally, the depth of the very top shelf measures 7.25″ while the second measures 9.75″.
We ship most items via a free curbside delivery but also offer white glove delivery and custom options (contact us if you have special requirements like this). Smaller items usually ship via UPS.
